| Svensson's Copper Underwing |
A new species for me last night and a very scarce one in VC68 ( Where Copper Underwing has yet to be recorded). This one shows a selection of pro Svensson's features -
Uneven chevron peaks above the spot on the upperside.
A solid bar on the underwing.
Diffuse dark / pale banding on underside of the flank .
Blackish, pale tipped palps.
Now I dont think any of these are diagnostic, but when John Langmaid refers to the Coppers as 'jigsaw species' where many characters have to place the balance of probability, this one does just that. I cant find any pro Copper Underwing features. I dont want to have this fine moth killed, so that will do for me.
Breezy and clear. A new, tricky, sp for me last night...

I think you are right on the Svensson's, but for reference did you also check the one reasonably consistent diagnostic feature - the extent of the copper colouration on the underside of the hindwing? Well worth checking that on any others you get.
