Mild for the time of year, down to 5 degrees, but for some of the time the cloud rolled back to reveal a bright full moon.
Started the year off with...
Taxa
1799 Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata) 1
2258 Chestnut (Conistra vaccinii) 1
2 moths of 2 sp.
HNY Stewart- you're ahead of me! Only Winter Moth so far. I do think you're moth is a Dark Chestnut though it's a bit worn. Heavy white ticking along the leading edge and a 'snipped off' look to the wings look like good field marks to me-
ReplyDeleteI caught something very similar last year-http://trappingsofsuccess.blogspot.com/2011/01/new-year1201.html#comment-form
The post even has a comment from a northern bloke named Stewart on it! See what you think?
Yes you are right Matt, I even have images of Dark Chestnut just like it - but its worn enough to stop seeing the straight or concave trailing edge and rumour has it that Dark Chestnuts dont survive as adults up here over winter, its too cold? Saying that, this has been a very mild winter.
ReplyDeleteThe Chestnuts I catch up here are usually much lighter with an obvious dark dot in the wing, but I've seen pics of dark Common Chestnuts too that have been dismissed.
I have sent three images of it to the recorder for a verdict. A great start to 2012, only my second moth and I cock it up! Time to concentrate I reckon...
